This guide applies to all bicycles using a quill stem.
This type of stem is mainly found on city bikes, although they can also be found on older mountain bikes and road bikes.
Handlebar stems are available in various sizes.
The most common diameters for city bike stems are 22.2mm and 25.4mm.
The stem diameter can often be found on the stem itself. If not, use a vernier caliper to measure either the old stem or the inside of the headset.

Step 1 : Removing the handlebar stem

Loosen the bolt in the center of the stem using a spanner or allen key. (1)
You should be able to turn the stem fully now.
If the stem won't budge, try tapping the stem screw at the top of the stem with a nylon or rubber hammer.
Then try loosening the stem again.
Now loosen the stem bolts on the handlebar clamp to remove the handlebars. (2)
The stem can now be removed by turning it and pushing it upwards. (3)
If the stem still won’t come off after the hammer tap, try using some WD-40 or penetrating oil. Inject a generous amount and let it settle for 30 minutes, then try again. If the stem still won’t come off after this, it is best to go to a specialist.
Step 2 : Mounting the handlebar stem

After removing the handlebar stem, it’s time to clean the steerer tube. (1)
Then grease up the new handlebar stem with a little bearing grease. (2)
Insert the stem in the steerer tube for the desired height, but pay attention to the minimum length of the stem that must be in the frame. (3)
Step 3 : Mounting the handlebar stem

Straighten the handlebar stem and tighten the extender firmly, so the stem can no longer turn. (1)
Mount the handlebars back on the stem and tighten the bolts by hand. (2)
Now adjust the handlebars to the right height and firmly tighten the bolts. (3)
