Bicycle Spokes

How to Choose Replacement Bicycle Spokes

Check spoke length and wheel measurements

Which spoke length do you need? For a direct replacement, measure an undamaged spoke from the same position in the wheel, provided the existing specification is correct.
For a new wheel build, the required length depends on the hub dimensions, rim's effective diameter and lacing pattern. Lacing describes how the spokes cross between the hub and rim.
Wheel size alone is not enough. Even two 28-inch wheels can require different spoke lengths.
If you're uncertain, ask a bicycle mechanic or wheel builder to confirm the measurements.

Match spoke type, gauge and material

Cycle spokes come in many lengths, thicknesses and materials. The correct specification depends on your wheel's hub, rim and intended use.

The main spoke designs include:
•    J-bend: A curved head that fits compatible hub flanges.
•    Straight-pull: A straight head for hubs designed specifically for this fitting.
•    Straight-gauge: A spoke with a consistent shaft diameter.
•    Butted: A spoke with a thinner middle section and thicker ends.

Gauge refers to spoke thickness. For example, 14-gauge spokes are commonly 2.0 mm in diameter. Thinner and thicker options are available for different wheel designs. Always check the actual diameter and length, as spokes with the same gauge can come in many lengths.
Material is another consideration. Stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance, making it a popular choice for everyday cycling. You can find examples in the spoke 14 INOX range. Other steel options are available, including spoke 14 steel. If you're matching a dark wheel finish, spoke 14 black offers another choice.

Different bicycles may require heavier-gauge spokes. For example, some utility and cargo wheels use thicker designs, such as those found among spoke 12 steel and spoke 10 products. These are not automatically stronger replacements for every wheel, as the hub and rim must accommodate the spoke diameter.
There are also many other sizes, finishes and spoke constructions, including bladed designs and unusual head shapes. Browse special spokes when your wheel requires a less common specification.

Whether you're replacing one spoke or building a complete wheel, match the length, diameter, head type and thread to the original wheel requirements.

Check spoke nipples and wheel-building tools

Spoke nipples connect the spokes to the rim and allow tension adjustments.
Check nipple thread compatibility, length and rim fit before ordering. Browse spoke nipples and washers for suitable components.
For installation and maintenance, explore spoke tools and spoke gauges.
If the rim or hub is badly damaged, consider a replacement from the bicycle wheels range.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spokes

How do you find the correct bicycle spoke length?

Measure a matching undamaged spoke or calculate the required length using the hub, rim and lacing specifications. Ask a wheel builder if you're unsure.

What is the difference between J-bend and straight-pull spokes?

J-bend spokes have a curved head. Straight-pull spokes have a straight head. Each requires a compatible hub design.

Do you need to replace the nipple when replacing a spoke?

Not always. Replace it if the threads are damaged, the nipple is corroded or it cannot be adjusted reliably. Check compatibility with the new spoke.
