Bicycle Helmets

Shopping for a bicycle helmet online? Hollandbikeshop.com has the bicycle helmet you’re looking for.
Even the most experienced cyclist can take a tumble, so it's important to own a solid bicycle helmet that can prevent serious damage.
In the wide and versatile range of cycling wear at Hollandbikeshop.com, you’ll find bicycle helmets that comply with the European safety standards (EN 1078).

Bicycle helmet types

A bicycle helmet provides excellent protection in case of a fall.
It’s a mandatory accessory for competitions in certain cycling disciplines, like mountain biking and racing.
A bicycle helmet can prevent serious brain damage by absorbing and distributing the force of impact along the shell of the helmet.
It's part of the so-called passive protection for road safety.
And remember, an accident can be caused by anyone: no matter how careful you are, someone else making a mistake can cause you to take a fall.
We're noticing an increase in the use of bicycle helmets now that e-bikes and speed pedelecs are gaining in popularity, which is a good thing considering that
higher speeds will automatically increase the impact of a fall.
It's the reason why many cyclists already wear bicycle helmets in traffic every day.
Children's bike helmets also offer important protection to children, especially the ones that are learning to ride a bicycle.
Thanks to the modern designs and prints featured on most children's bike helmets nowadays, children won't mind wearing a bike helmet one bit!
If you've hit the ground hard during a bike ride, if you’ve dropped your helmet or if you've damaged the shell in some other way, it's advisable to replace the bicycle helmet.
Once the shell has been damaged or broken, full protection from your helmet is no longer a guarantee.
At Hollandbikeshop.com, we offer bicycle helmets for cyclists of all ages and for various cycling disciplines.

Are bicycle helmets mandatory?
In the Netherlands, wearing a helmet isn't mandatory, except for speed bike pedelec riders.
Since these high-speed electric bicycles are classified as mopeds, the rider has to comply to the same safety standards as a moped rider.
This includes having a license plate and wearing a helmet.

Is a bicycle helmet mandatory for road bikers?
Although a bicycle helmet is not mandatory for road bikers/racers, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended.
For road bikers participating in an organized tour or competition, however,
wearing a helmet is almost always mandatory. The tour or competition organizers will remove you from the road or track if you're not wearing a helmet.

When should you replace your bicycle helmet?
A bicycle helmet is made to last you around 3 to 5 years.
When you've taken a tumble, however, you should replace your helmet - even when there is no visible damage.
Micro damage (like small tears in the shell) can compromise the helmet's dampening qualities, so the helmet can no longer offer proper protection.

What is the proper bicycle helmet fit?
The right helmet size can be determined by measuring your head circumference, from about 2 finger widths above the eyebrows.
Of course, your helmet should be comfortable, especially if you often bike long distances.
The helmet should definitely not be too loose or too tight.
