Step by step guide; Replacing the saddle on a candle seatpost
Saddles can be mounted on two different types of seatposts:
candle seatposts and patented seatposts.
To mount a saddle on a candle seatpost, you will need an additional part: the saddle clamp.
You won’t need this part for a patented seatpost, as the saddle clamp is already built into the seatpost.
This guide only applies to mounting a saddle on a candle seatpost.

The seat clamp and seatpost connection is almost always the same, with an inner diameter of 22.2mm,
though there may be a difference in the connection between the saddle clamp and the saddle.
What saddle clamp you need depends on the brand of the saddle.
Brands like Brooks and Lepper manufacture saddles that can only be used in combination with on of their own saddle clamps.
90% of all Dutch city bike saddles have a single saddle frame, suitable for a saddle clamp manufactured by a brand like Selle Royal.
Step 1 : Removing the old saddle

The saddle clamp, the part that connects the seatpost to the saddle frame, is located underneath the saddle
and held together with a single bolt. (1)
This bolt is tightened with one or two nuts.
You will need a spanner or a box wrench to undo the clamp bolt.
Once the bolt is sufficiently loosened, the clamp can be removed from the seatpost. (2)
This will make it easier to fully undo the clamp and remove it from the saddle. (3)
Step 2 : Mounting the new saddle

Place the saddle clamp in the center of the saddle frame, on the rails. (1)
Partially tighten the bolt, so that you can still readjust the saddle.
Now slide the clamp over the seatpost and adjust the saddle to the preferred angle. (2)
Proceed to firmly tighten the bolt so the saddle is no longer tiltable.
Step 3 : Inverted saddle clamp mounting

Inverted mounting of the saddle clamp is possible on some saddles. (1, 2)
This will lower the saddle height by a few centimeters.
Step 4 : Adjusting the saddle clamp on the rails

Never mount the saddle clamp all the way to one end (2, 3) on the seatpost.
This would cause uneven weight distribution and over time it could lead to the saddle frame snapping.
