If your cassette is worn and needs to be replaced, it’s best to simultaneously replace the chain and chainrings.
This way, the new parts can wear together.
A new chain would skip off of the teeth on a worn cassette or chain ring, because the tooth profile is no longer correct.
This guide tells you how to replace a Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM cassette with the bodies mentioned below.
The grooves of the body that the cassette is mounted on are different, so they are not interchangeable.
Campagnolo and Shimano/SRAM each produce their own cassette removal tools.
And although Campagnolo and Shimano chain whips are interchangeable, there are various chain whips available.
The specific chain whip you will need depends on the number of sprockets.
A chain whip for a 6-speed cassette will not be suitable for a 12-speed cassette.
Step 1 : Removing the cassette

Put the cassette removal tool in the cassette’s lock ring. (2)
Wrap the chain whip around one of the cogs of the cassette, with the chain whip handle pointing in the driving direction. (3)
Keep the wheel upright and use the adjustable wrench on the cassette removal tool.
Turn the lock ring counter-clockwise, while the chain whip keeps the cassette in place. (3)
Depending on the type of axle, you can use an adjustable wrench (thru axle) or a socket wrench (quick release axle).
Step 2 : Mounting the cassette

Once the lock ring is removed, the whole cassette can be removed from the body. (1)
The grooves of the body are designed so that the cassette can only be mounted on the body in a particular way. (2)
Slide the new cassette over the hub body.
Screw the lock ring onto the cassette by hand.
You can use the removal tool and adjustable wrench for the last bit of tightening. (3)
