Are bicycle helmets mandatory?
In the Netherlands, wearing a helmet isn't mandatory, except for speed bike pedelec riders.
Since these high-speed electric bicycles are classified as mopeds, the rider has to comply to the same safety standards as a moped rider.
This includes having a license plate and wearing a helmet.

Is a bicycle helmet mandatory for road bikers?
Although a bicycle helmet is not mandatory for road bikers/racers, wearing a helmet is strongly recommended.
For road bikers participating in an organized tour or competition, however,
wearing a helmet is almost always mandatory. The tour or competition organizers will remove you from the road or track if you're not wearing a helmet.

When should you replace your bicycle helmet?
A bicycle helmet is made to last you around 3 to 5 years.
When you've taken a tumble, however, you should replace your helmet - even when there is no visible damage.
Micro damage (like small tears in the shell) can compromise the helmet's dampening qualities, so the helmet can no longer offer proper protection.

What is the proper bicycle helmet fit?
The right helmet size can be determined by measuring your head circumference, from about 2 finger widths above the eyebrows.
Of course, your helmet should be comfortable, especially if you often bike long distances.
The helmet should definitely not be too loose or too tight.
