Folding Bikes
The folding bike is exactly what its name suggests: a bicycle that can be folded into a compact form and can be used to easily get from point A to point B. It’s a little smaller than your regular city bike and can be folded into an even smaller package, making the folding bike a perfect accessory if you often use public transport (for example). Are folding bikes convenient?
Folding bikes are convenient for everyone from city bikers to holidaymakers and for commuters in particular. You’ve undoubtedly spotted folding bikes on the train or while waiting on the platform. People bike to the station on their folding bike, take the train to their destination and then bike the rest of the way to the office. Once there, it’s a matter of folding the folding bike into a compact package and stowing it away. Easy-peasy.Are folding bikes comfortable?
Folding bikes are quite comfortable. Though every folding bike is different, and the cheapest models aren’t always necessarily the most comfortable to ride, most folding bicycles are very comfortable to use, even for longer periods of time. They might have a low entry or extra comfy saddle, or they come with the option to adjust the handlebars and saddle to the ideal height. A foldable city bike is also very comfortable. Although this model is less compact than other folding bikes, it is still quite suitable for a daily commute to the office that requires a considerable amount of cycling.
If you’re looking for extra cycling comfort, try an electric folding bike. Though electric folding bikes are slightly heavier than other folding bikes, they’re still suitable to take onto public transport. The saddle on the electric folding bike is situated lower, so you have the added security of knowing you can put your feet back on the ground whenever you need to.
How do you ride a folding bike?
Folding bikes handle a little differently than a regular city bike. How different partly depends on the folding bike model you choose - though some aspects are the same for most folding bikes. For one thing, the wheels of folding bikes are usually smaller than those on a regular (city) bike and you may need to pedal more to get ahead, unless you have a foldable city bike. Foldable city bikes have bigger bicycle wheels. What types of folding bikes are there?
Folding bikes can be very different from one another, and though the gear system is often where folding bikes differ the most, it’s easiest to look at the differences in folding bikes per each type. There’s the compact folding bike that you’ll most often see in public; it’s a popular choice, as it is designed with adjustability as its most important feature. The compact folding bike has smaller wheels, can be parked stably in its folded condition (and won’t fall over at the slightest wobble on a train ride) and when you fold the bike, its parts are kept together in its folded state.
There’s also the folding city bike - a less adjustable type compared to the compact folding bike, though it provides more cycling comfort. The wheels of this folding bike type are typically larger, so you’re not required to pedal as much as you would on a compact folding bike. It’s a great folding bike to take with you on holiday, when you want to bring your own bicycle without taking up too much luggage space.
For fans of e-bikes and folding bikes, there are now electric folding bikes, or folding e-bikes. This type of folding bike is perfect for your daily commute and on holidays. When you work in the city center but can’t park your car there, you will still reach your destination on time with an electric folding bike. This type of folding bike has a very silent motor and a battery that is integrated in the seat tube.
Other special folding bikes, beside electric folding bikes, include sportive folding bikes like the foldable mountain bike and the foldable road bike. Anyone who enjoys cycling with a friend, on holidays or whenever, will love the foldable tandem.
How do you fold a folding bike?
As the name suggests, you fold (or rather bend) a folding bike in half. The most common way to fold a folding bike is unlocking the hinges on the frame and handlebar. By unlocking the hinge on the frame, you can fold the bicycle in half, and by unlocking the hinge on the handlebar, you can fold the handlebar downward. You will often be able to or even need to fold the pedals and lower the saddle. For a step-by-step guide on how to fold your new folding bike, see the instructions included with your folding bike.Once your folding bike is folded, it should be reasonably easy to carry and transport. If you could use some help carrying your folding bike, we suggest a bicycle carrier bag.
