Tubular tires were developed specifically for lower rolling resistance, although that doesn't mean they're only suitable for road racing.
These days, tubular tires are often seen in MTB and cyclo-cross as well.
There are tubular tires with deep tread patterns that let you tackle uneven terrains without a care and take leisurely rides through the mountains.
A tubular tire is a bicycle tire that is stitched closed around the inner tube to form a torus.
In the UK this type of tire is called a tub, while it's called a sew-up in the US and a single in Australia.
The torus is taped or glued to a specially designed rim, known in the US as a tubular rim.
However, this type of tire is more commonly known around the world as a tubular.
Tubular tires are often used by competitive road racers.
They don't have a tire bead to hook into the rim, so using this type of tire requires the use of a different type of rim.
Tubular tire rims are hookless and slightly more hollow than regular rims.
The advantage of tubular rims?
In general, they're a lot sturdier and provide better shock absorption.
Tubular tires are glued to the rim, to prevent the tire from rolling during turns.
Another advantage to tubular tires is that they can be operated on a wider range of tire pressures.
Thanks to the closed system of the tubular tire, its rolling resistance is exceptionally low.
