E-bike brakes - Types

Electric bicycles have several options when it comes to the brake system. Usually e-bikes are equipped with one of three standard types of (hand) brakes or a combination of brake types, being disc brakes, roller brakes or rim brakes.
E-bikes rarely have coaster brakes anymore, because even though coaster brakes are simple and powerful, they only use the rear wheel to brake and could cause the wheel to lock and skid. 
Disc brakes are good because of their short braking distance and dosable braking power, which is always powerful regardless of dry or wet conditions. They are high-maintenance though, something to take into account. 
By comparison, roller brakes offer a durable, maintenance-free braking system.
This system uses rollers that are pushed down in order to provide braking power.
It is quite a heavy system with a long braking distance, that can block if the system overheats.
And finally, there are rim brakes, also known as V-brakes.
With this system, braking power is provided through the brake pads that are pressed onto the rims.
It makes the pads prone to wear and since they're also sensitive to dirt, you’ll have to replace them on a regular basis.
And yet, rim brakes are recommended: they’re reliable and lightweight, and offer great grip as well as a short braking distance (even with sudden braking).
There's no need to use a lot of force to operate the brakes - perfect!
