Bicycle bags - what size do you need?

What size bike bag you need may differ, depending on what you’re going to do with it. A single pannier will fit fewer things than a double pannier, yet there are plenty of options. 

•    35 liters
The 35-liter double pannier (with its fairly rectangular bags) is a model many are familiar with. Modest, but with plenty of space for your things.

•    40 - 45 liters
Double panniers of 40 to 45 liters are very suitable for a spare set of dry clothes and some camping gear when you’re going on long cycling tours, but can also be used to transport groceries, textbooks or the spoils after an afternoon of shopping. 

•    65 - 80 liters
Those in need of a powerhouse may prefer a 65-liter pannier, or even go one step up, with panniers as big as 65 to 80 liters. This size is very suitable when you depend on your bicycle on a daily basis, for things like delivering packages. 

•    Smaller models

How do you install bike bags?

Depending on the type of bike bag, there can be various mounting options. Most are easily installed without tools, using straps or a convenient click-fit system. 

Removable single panniers are usually equipped with hooks or a click-fit system, while double panniers come with straps that you can snap or buckle shut. For a few years now, there’s been the MIK system (Mounting Is Key). The MiK system lets you easily switch between accessories and transport your things with unprecedented stability. 

The question we’re asked most of all by parents, is whether certain bike bags are suitable for use with a rear child bike seat. Our answer: most definitely! Of course, there are certain conditions involved. For example, you can only do so with child bike seats that are mounted on the seat tube, and the luggage carrier’s capacity should be at least 25 kilos (any lower, and you’ll have to consider your child’s weight and the weight of your bike bags). 

In principle, you can use all double panniers equipped with two connecting straps in combination with a child bike seat. If your carrier is slightly too short, and your child’s feet are at risk of getting stuck, a luggage carrier extender can be just what you need.
 

Which bike bags for a cycling vacation?
