Spokes are the wheel parts that connect the rim to the hub, and they are usually made of steel.
When installing spokes, you first thread the spoke through a hole in the side of the hub, and then through the opening on the rim, before screwing a spoke nipple on the end.
The spoke ends sticking out through the rims are then taped off with rim tape to protect the inner tube.
The spokes take a lot of abuse when you're cycling, especially with intensive use, so installing the spokes correctly is important, as well as performing regular maintenance on them.
