The fixed-gear bicycle has been around for generations and finds its origins in track cycling.
A fixed-gear drivetrain has the drive sprocket (or cog) threaded or bolted directly to the hub of the rear wheel, without a freewheel.
Although this setup doesn't allow the cyclist to rest their feet on the pedals while the bicycle is stationary, the fixed-gear system does make it possible to cycle backwards.
Most regular bicycle parts have been removed from the fixie's design, making it a relatively lightweight bicycle type that can reach high speeds.
Originally, even the brakes had been removed to reduce the total weight of the bicycle.
Since it's required by law in most European countries to have at least one brake/functional braking system installed on your bicycle, however, the fixies in our range all feature brakes.
